Head of Syrian regime Bashar al-Assad reaffirms conditions for Turkish rapprochement amid Moscow mediation efforts

DAMASCUS — Amid ongoing discussions of a potential rapprochement between Damascus and Ankara under Moscow’s mediation, head of the Syrian regime Bashar al-Assad reiterated his conditions for restoring relations with Turkey.

Speaking before the People’s Assembly, Assad emphasized that any reconciliation with Ankara would require the complete withdrawal of Turkish forces from Syrian territory and an end to Turkey’s support for what he termed “terrorist factions.” He stressed that Syria remains steadfast in defending its sovereignty and will not relinquish any of its rights.

Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s Deputy Envoy to the United Nations, discussed the evolving dynamics in an interview with the Rudaw. Polyansky noted positive signals between Moscow and Ankara regarding a potential rapprochement with Damascus. He also underscored Russia’s support for rebuilding relations between the Syrian regime and the Democratic Autonomous Administration in the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES), suggesting that such internal reconciliation is essential for a sustainable solution.

Polyansky emphasized that the establishment of autonomy in the region should be a Syrian-led process, free from external interference.
