Chaldean Patriarchate addresses Synod boycott by five bishops, calls for unity and apology
BAGHDAD — In response to the recent boycott of the Chaldean Synod by five bishops, the Chaldean Patriarchate released a statement clarifying that the boycott was aimed at undermining the Church, rather than Patriarch Mar Louis Raphael Sako personally.
The statement urged the bishops to unite with the Patriarch to ensure the Church can continue its noble mission, emphasizing that the withdrawal of Republican Decree No. 147 of 2013 by an unnamed influential party has led to widespread concern about the Church’s future.
The Patriarchate revealed that Patriarch Sako had requested the Archbishop of Erbil to issue a statement condemning the decree’s withdrawal, but the Archbishop refused. Despite the growing tensions, Patriarch Sako has maintained a patient approach, striving to protect the Church’s reputation. However, the situation escalated with the bishops’ decision to boycott the Synod, prompting the Patriarch to call for an official and public apology or to address the matter through the Church judiciary.
The statement concluded by offering the bishops a deadline of 5 September to issue an apology and resolve the issue. Should they fail to do so, a report will be submitted to Pope Francis, who will take appropriate action against the five bishops involved.
