UN Security Council unanimously extends UNIFIL mission amid increased tensions between Israel and Hezbollah

BEIRUT — After complex negotiations spearheaded by France, the UN Security Council unanimously voted to extend the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) until August 2025. This decision comes amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, with the goal of working towards a long-term resolution.

The Security Council’s resolution emphasized that the situation in Lebanon continues to pose a significant threat to international peace and security. The Council reiterated its support for a complete cessation of hostilities and strongly urged all relevant parties to take immediate measures to de-escalate tensions.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the importance of ensuring that UNIFIL remains adaptable in its operations to support de-escalation efforts.

A Western diplomat involved in the negotiations noted that a key focus was on urging restraint from both sides to avoid further escalation. The diplomat also acknowledged the complexity of the negotiations, particularly the challenge of securing US support, despite the eventual consensus.

The extension of the UNIFIL mission is seen as crucial for maintaining an effective peacekeeping presence in the region and preventing the conflict from escalating further.
