UN experts condemn sharp rise in executions in Iran, urge immediate halt

TEHRAN — Iranian authorities carried out 93 executions between 31 July and 30 August, prompting concern from UN experts over the sharp increase in executions last month. The experts have called for an immediate halt to the practice.

UN experts highlighted that this figure more than doubles the 45 executions carried out between 30 June and 30 July.

According to the experts, the Iranian regime has executed 400 people this year, including 15 women.

Nearly half of those executed, according to Iranian authorities, were convicted of “drug-related crimes.”

“Executions for violations of drug laws violate international standards,” the experts stated.

The UN has repeatedly called on Iran to suspend the death penalty, with the long-term goal of abolishing it altogether.
