Former Lebanese Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh arrested on money laundering charges

BEIRUT — On Tuesday, the Lebanese judiciary arrested former Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh following a three-hour interrogation related to a money laundering case, a judicial source reported.

Judge Jamal al-Hajjar ordered Salameh’s arrest after questioning him on charges of embezzling more than $40 million from the Central Bank of Lebanon.

Salameh, 74, is currently under investigation in Lebanon and five European countries, accused of misappropriating hundreds of millions of dollars from the Central Bank, contributing to Lebanon’s financial collapse, and laundering the funds abroad.

Salameh served as the governor of Lebanon’s Central Bank for 30 years, up until August 2023. In the final months of his tenure, Germany issued an international arrest warrant against him on corruption charges.
