Amuda, North and East Syria, begins construction of new cinema in memory of 1960 Amuda Cinema Fire victims
AMUDA, North and East Syria — In an initiative by the Democratic Autonomous Administration of Gozarto (Jazira) Canton, and in remembrance of the martyrs of the 1960 Amuda Cinema Fire, the Amuda Municipality in North and East Syria has begun the first phase of constructing a new cinema.
The cinema, currently under construction, will cover 1,162 square meters on the southern side of Amuda, with an estimated cost of $346,326, according to the People’s Municipality in Amuda.
The initial construction work, including excavation, laying foundations, and roof installation, is expected to be completed within six months.
In 1960, Amuda witnessed a tragic incident. Forced into the cinema to watch regime propaganda with the doors locked behind them, 280 people, including 200 children, died when a fire broke out. This incident became known as the Amuda Cinema Fire or the Amuda Cinema Massacre.
