Officials in Kurdistan Region of Iraq and Syriac Orthodox Archbishop Matti Sharaf discuss new church project and support for Christians
ANKAWA, Kurdistan Region of Iraq — Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Mosul and Kerkheslokh (Kirkuk) Mor Nicodemus Daoud Matti Sharaf welcomed Minister Shaaban Chali, Director of the Office of the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), during a meeting in Ankawa, KRI.
On behalf of KRI Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, Chali provided an update on the construction of the Umm al-Nour Syriac Orthodox Church in Ankawa, reiterating his support for the Christian community as an integral and historic part of the KRI.
Archbishop Sharaf emphasized the deep-rooted presence of Chaldeans–Syriacs–Assyrians and Christians in their ancestral lands, commending the KRI leadership for fostering citizenship, coexistence, democracy, and civility. He also highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by Christians in Iraq under the current conditions.
Chali underscored the importance of ongoing dialogue between religious leaders and the government to further strengthen the ties between different religious and ethnic groups in the KRI.
