U.S. and Iraq towards type of long-term security relationships

BAGHDAD —  After signing a memorandum of understanding between the U.S.-led International Coalition and Iraq, about termination of Coalition military mission in Iraq by September 2025, the U.S. Department of Defense issued a statement.

The plan includes the exit of hundreds of Coalition forces by September, and the exit of the rest of the forces by the end of 2026.

The statement added that Coalition and Iraq recognize that the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria remains a significant threat to the region and pledged to continue working to ensure the enduring ISIS defeat.

It also confirmed that the official announcement was initially scheduled to be issued weeks ago, but it was postponed due to the regional escalation related to the Israeli-Palestinian war, and to settle some remaining details.
