USUP President Ibrahim Mrad calls for Federalism in Lebanon, emphasizes dignity, sovereignty, and unity
BEIRUT — In a speech titled “The Last Chance,” delivered on the 10th anniversary of the Permanent Conference of Federalism, head of the Universal Syriac Union Party (USUP) Ibrahim Mrad stressed the need for Lebanese citizens to live with dignity and for all components of Lebanese society to freely practice their culture and faith. Mrad addressed past accusations that federalism promotes division, asserting that public opinion now understands that federalism is a system of governance, not separation.
Murad reaffirmed his commitment to finding solutions for Lebanon’s future, stating that he has faced accusations of extremism in his defense of the country’s existence, a label he embraces if it means standing up for these principles. He emphasized that the true measure of “Lebaneseness” is loyalty to Lebanon, and highlighted that culture, morals, and Christian teachings call for love and honesty in all dealings.
Mrad also addressed the current political situation, arguing that the focus should not be on quickly filling the vacancy in the presidency. Instead, the priority should be to disarm terrorist militias and form a sovereign, independent government. Only then, he said, should Lebanon elect a president who embodies the struggles and aspirations of the Lebanese people and their martyrs.
He stressed that federalists seek a unified homeland where dignity prevails, free from terrorism and external influence. Mrad expressed his support for his comrades in their call for a federal system in Lebanon, where each community can have its own entity, fostering peace, safety, and love.
In closing, Mrad thanked the federalist movement for their long-standing efforts, stating that their struggle is essential to building a free and independent Republic of Lebanon.
