Syriac Catholic Patriarch Younan discusses status of Middle East Christian communities with Pope Francis

VATICAN — During a visit to the Vatican, Syriac Catholic Patriarch Mar Ignatius Youssef III Younan met with Pope Francis to discuss the alarming situation in the Middle East, the importance of preserving the Christian presence there, and prospects for the future, particularly in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon.

The Patriarch affirmed his unwavering support for Eastern Christians, advocating for their legitimate rights to peace and security. He expressed profound gratitude to the Pope for his fatherly love and care for the global Church.

In the meeting, Patriarch Younan provided an overview of the Syriac Catholic Church’s condition in Eastern countries and the impact of ongoing wars and instability in the region.

Pope Francis emphasized the deep respect and appreciation for the Syriac Catholic Church, whose roots trace back to the apostles, and highlighted the importance of preserving its unique identity and Syriac language, calling it a “treasure of the Universal Church.”

The Pope also commended the Patriarch’s leadership and care for the Church amidst such challenging circumstances. In return, Patriarch Younan thanked Pope Francis, wishing him continued health and well-being.
