Bethnahrin Patriotic Union and US-based activist Daoud Borno, discuss future of Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian unity and autonomy in Iraq
NINEVEH PLAINS — In a bid to strengthen relations among Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian political parties and figures in Iraq, the Bethnahrin Patriotic Union (Huyodo Bethnahrin Athroyo, HBA) welcomed political activist Daoud Borno, visiting from the United States, for discussions on the future of their community in Iraq.
Borno was received by head of the HBA Joseph Sliwa, former HBA President Youssef Yaqoub Matti, member of the HBA Women’s Office Iqbal Elias, and members of the HBA Executive Office Aziz Zebari and Samer Khaled.
During the meeting, the participants emphasized the importance of learning from the past political experiences of the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people, particularly addressing the challenges posed by external political forces. They highlighted the need to capitalize on these lessons to shape a more unified and effective political strategy for the future.
The discussions also focused on the necessity of forming an autonomous region within the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), as well as transforming Nineveh Plains into a distinct region within a democratic, federal, and pluralistic Iraq. This vision, they agreed, is critical to ensuring self-governance and preserving the rights and identity of the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian community in Iraq.
