Bethnahrain National Council condemns Turkish aggression in Syria, calls for international action against ‘genocidal policies’
BETH NAHRIN — The Bethnahrain National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo D’Bethnahrin, MUB) issued a public statement, headline The Free Will of the People Will Prevail Against Genocide Policy, condemning the recent Turkish attacks in North and East Syria and calling for decisive international intervention to halt Turkey’s policy of aggression.
The statement recounted the attacks on 23 October 2024, where the Turkish Army and its Syrian National Army (SNA) proxies targeted institutions of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES) by air and land, resulting in significant civilian casualties and extensive damage. “The Syriac [Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean] people have borne heavy losses, suffering under policies aimed at cultural and demographic erasure,” read the statement. “These attacks, viewed as part of a longstanding policy of genocide against Syriac [Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean] people, have left them stateless for nearly two centuries.”
Despite these challenges, the MUB highlighted the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community’s commitment to building a democratic society through joint resistance efforts with the people of North and East Syria. “For this struggle for liberation to succeed, it requires the support of the global community and international powers,” it said. “The silence of these entities enables further injustices perpetrated by the Justice and Development Party and the Nationalist Movement Party.”
The MUB urged the United Nations, US, EU, the Arab League, and other international organizations to take immediate action to curb these aggressive policies, including closing Syrian airspace to Turkish warplanes and imposing sanctions on Turkish officials responsible for war crimes.
“Mass mobilization and strengthened diplomatic efforts by Syriac [Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean] people, both domestically and abroad, are critical to achieving national freedom and countering Turkey’s war on our people,” the MUB emphasized. “Every national milestone is essential for preserving Syriac [Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean] identity and thwarting harmful agendas.”
The statement concluded that lasting peace and justice require a culture of democratic coexistence rooted in the shared will of all people, adding, “We will continue steadfastly towards our goals, driven by the will and interests of the Syriac [Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean] people.”
