Syriac Strategic Research Center hosts seminar on role of Syriac-language press in national awareness

ZALIN, North and East Syria — In celebration of the 175th anniversary of Syriac-language journalism, the Syriac Strategic Research Center (SSRC) hosted a dialogue seminar titled Power of the Word: Role of Syriac Press in Shaping National Consciousness in the Armenian Benevolent Association Hall in Zalin (Qamishli), North and East Syria.

The event brought together representatives from institutions of the Bethnahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo D’Bethnahrin, MUB), including the Suroyo Media Foundation, alongside Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) political parties, regional institutions, and local journalists.

The seminar focused on two main topics: the current state of Syriac-language journalism, including challenges, opportunities, and the impact of digital advancements, and the role of Syriac media in fostering national awareness in today’s context. The first session, moderated by Maria Hanna from the Syriac Press Agency, explored the history and evolution of Syriac journalism. Kino Gabriel, an SSRC consultant, led the second session, discussing the Syriac Press’s contribution to national consciousness and the specific needs of the current period.

Attendees also received questionnaires to provide feedback, offer suggestions, and evaluate the discussions.
