Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani calls for state control of weapons and condemns regional violence in meeting with UN envoy

BAGHDAD — In a meeting with the new UN Secretary-General’s representative to Iraq Omani Mohammed al-Hassan, Iraq’s top Shiite leader Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani called for restricting weapons exclusively to Iraqi state authorities to safeguard the nation’s security and stability.

Al-Sistani, who has refrained from meeting Iraqi officials since 2015 due to ignored recommendations and rampant corruption, emphasized that this goal requires well-planned, science-based strategies founded on competence and integrity. He called for preventing external interference, upholding the rule of law, and combating corruption at all levels.

Addressing the critical regional situation, al-Sistani expressed deep sorrow over the ongoing crises in Lebanon and Gaza, criticizing the international community’s inability to enforce solutions or protect civilians. Recently, Israel’s Channel 14 broadcasted an image of al-Sistani on a list of individuals allegedly targeted by the Israeli government.
