Syriac Maronite Bishops call for international action to end conflict between Israel and Hezbollah and support Lebanon’s stability
BEIRUT — Amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, the bishops of the Syriac Maronite Church issued a statement urging the international community to enact a resolution to halt hostilities and to implement UN Security Council Resolution No. 1701, which paves the way for displaced Lebanese to return to their homes and communities. The statement came after the bishops’ monthly meeting, led by Syriac Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros al-Rai.
The bishops welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent initiative to convene a Paris conference aimed at supporting Lebanon’s sovereignty and aiding its people. They praised international efforts, emphasizing the urgent need to free Lebanon from the devastation of war.
Acknowledging the compassionate and humanitarian response of the Syriac Maronite community, the bishops expressed gratitude for the continued support extended to displaced individuals. They noted the severe toll of the ongoing crisis, which has led to widespread destruction and loss in southern Beirut, the Bekaa Valley, and other affected regions across Lebanon.
The statement concluded by urging Syriac Maronite leaders and the Lebanese people to hold steadfast to their faith and values, expressing hope that officials will take decisive steps to end violence, restore peace, and secure stability for Lebanon, the region, and beyond.
