ANKARA — Turkish authorities ousted 2 more elected pro-Kurdish mayors from office in Tunceli (Dêrsim) and Ovacık (Pulur) municipalities and replaced them with trustees, due to alleged terrorism-related charges.
Tunceli Co-Mayor Cevdet Konak (Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party in Turkey, DEM) and Ovacık Mayor Mustafa Sarıgül (Republican People’s Party, Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi, CHP) were sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison for alleged membership in a terrorist organization.
Thousands of residents in Tunceli (Dêrsim) in southeastern Turkey demonstrated, in largest protests of its kind in several years, prompting the deployment of thousands of Turkish security forces.
Tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets were used to suppress the protesters who broke through the barriers set up by the security of the Turkish authorities in the vicinity of the municipality building.
