Legendary singer Fairouz, voice of unity and inspiration across generations, turns 90

BEIRUT — Fairouz, the iconic Lebanese singer of Assyrian and Syriac Maronite, celebrated her 90th birthday, marking a lifetime of unparalleled contributions to Lebanese music and culture. Often regarded as a symbol of national unity in Lebanon, Fairouz’s enduring voice continues to inspire millions across Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia) and beyond.

Renowned for singing about humanitarian causes and national unity, Fairouz’s music resonates strongly in Lebanon and Syria. Despite her retreat from the public eye in recent years, her songs remain a morning tradition in countless households, cherished as timeless anthems of hope and nostalgia.

Born Nihad Haddad in Beirut in 1934, Fairouz, alongside her husband, the legendary composer Assi Rahbani, and his brother Mansour Rahbani, transformed the landscape of Arab music with groundbreaking compositions. She later collaborated with her son Ziad Rahbani and daughter Rima, ensuring that her legacy continues to inspire future generations.
