Bethnahrin Women’s Union holds events on International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women
BETH NHARIN — Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) women’s organizations, including the Bethnahrin Women’s Union (Huyodo d’Neshe d’Bethnahrin, HNB), issued statements marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women condemning violence and oppression against women, emphasizing the need for empowerment and resistance.
The HNB held a seminar at the headquarters of the Federation of Syriac Associations in Turkey (Süryani Dernekler Federasyonu, SÜDEF) in Midyat. Discussions focused on the impact of violence on women and families, the necessity of empowering women, and the importance of their active participation in all spheres of life.
In Sweden, the HNB’s Södertälje branch hosted a workshop at the Beth Nahrin Cultural Center. The workshop highlighted the need to combat violence and explored topics such as human development, historical and contemporary forms of violence against women, including psychological abuse, sexual violence, and forced early marriages.
The discussions also noted that, despite advancements in education and technology, women worldwide — including Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) women — continue to face physical and psychological violence. It was emphasized that even in European countries, Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) women are often misled into believing they are fully free from such struggles.
In Germany, the HNB’s Delmenhorst branch participated in activities in Bremen to mark the fight against violence against women. A representative delivered a speech urging global solidarity among women to resist violence and oppression. The representative also criticized the persistence of regressive and reactionary practices worldwide, reaffirming HNB’s commitment to commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
“The HNB will continue to commemorate the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women,” she concluded.
