Ibrahim Mrad calls for democratic reforms and trial of Hezbollah leaders for betrayal of Lebanon
BEIRUT — Ibrahim Mrad, head of the Universal Syriac Union Party (USUP), called for the trial of Hezbollah by the Lebanese Army on charges of betraying Lebanon and its people. Speaking on the Beirut Today program, Mrad accused Hezbollah of undermining Lebanon’s sovereignty and working to impose Iran’s “Guardianship of the Jurist” system, as acknowledged by former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Mrad argued that Hezbollah has no connection to Lebanon’s interests and accused it of failing to defend the country. Instead, he alleged, the group provoked Israel into invading southern Lebanon and occupying 15 kilometers of its territory.
Hezbollah’s involvement in regional conflicts, including in Syria, Yemen, and the formation of terrorist cells in the Gulf, was also highlighted by Mrad. He rejected any proposals for Hezbollah to participate in Lebanon’s political framework, accusing the group of using Lebanon as a base to destabilize the Middle East and as justification for Israeli aggression.
Mrad criticized Lebanon’s sovereign and opposition parties for their inability to challenge Hezbollah’s dominance, stating they had effectively handed over control of the country. He demanded the disarmament of Hezbollah and called for its exclusion from Lebanon’s political and social landscape to prevent the establishment of a “state within a state.”
He further denounced the current caretaker government for its lack of legitimacy, claiming it operates under Hezbollah’s influence. Mrad advocated for early general elections, the election of a new president, and discussions on restructuring Lebanon’s political system into a truly democratic framework.
Mrad concluded by announcing plans for a major conference in Europe, to be held under the banner of the Christian Front. The event will bring together Lebanese opposition parties from all communities to chart a united vision for the country’s future.
