Syriac Union Party Co-Chair Barsom urges political solutions amid escalating Syrian conflict

HOLEB, Syria — In the midst of significant shifts in the Syrian conflict, Co-Chair of the Syriac Union Party (SUP) Sanharib Barsom voiced his concerns over the rapid and alarming developments unfolding in various regions.

In comments to Syriac Press, Barsom emphasized the troubling expansion of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) at the expense of Syrian regime forces and allied Iranian militias. He noted that the situation reflects the complexities of the ongoing conflict, which appears influenced by obscure regional and international agreements.

Barsom raised questions regarding the recent withdrawals by regime forces and the lack of immediate Russian intervention, which he believes have created significant uncertainty. He added that both Turkey and the US have denied supporting the armed factions, adding to the ambiguity surrounding these developments.

Barsom warned of the possibility of war crimes being committed by HTS, an internationally designated terrorist organization, and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA), which terrible abuses in the Syrian territory under their control. He highlighted the urgent need to protect civilians and ensure their safety amid escalating violence.

The SUP leader attributed the intensifying conflict to the Syrian regime’s refusal to pursue a political resolution in line with international agreements, instead opting for security and military measures to assert control. This, he argued, has prompted other factions to adopt military strategies, further complicating the situation.

Reaffirming the SUP’s stance, Barsom called for all parties to commit to a comprehensive political solution in Syria. He also stressed the critical role of the United Nations in resolving the conflict and ensuring the safety and security of all Syrians.
