Middle East Council of Churches calls for protection of civilians amid intensified conflict in northwest Syria
BEIRUT — The Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) issued a heartfelt statement regarding the ongoing conflict in northern Syria, calling for resilience and unity among the affected communities. The Council prayed for God’s strength to help people remain steadfast on their land, sustain their homes and institutions, and continue their daily lives despite the challenges.
MECC expressed its hope that both public and private institutions would be allowed to operate without obstruction, urging compassion for the people enduring this turbulent period.
In its statement, the Council called on local and international decision-makers to prioritize the protection of civilians. It urged them to uphold the principles of international humanitarian law and prevent civilians from becoming casualties in regional political conflicts.
As a regional religious organization, MECC appealed to global religious bodies to advocate with influential authorities to ensure the safety and welfare of the civilian population. It also emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the escalating violence.
