US and European governments call for de-escalation and political solution in Syria
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The US government and key European governments have called for de-escalation and the implementation of a comprehensive political solution in Syria. “The current escalation in Syria underscores the urgent need for a Syrian-led political solution to the conflict, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254,” stated the US, France, Germany, and United Kingdom in a joint declaration released by the US State Department.
The White House emphasized that the refusal of the Bashar al-Assad to engage in the UN-backed political process and his reliance on support from Russia and Iran have contributed to the instability in northwestern Syria.
The statement urged for de-escalation, the protection of civilians and minorities, and the initiation of a credible political process to end the civil war through a settlement consistent with UNSC Resolution 2254.
“We will continue to fully defend and protect US personnel and military sites, which are critical to ensuring that the Islamic State (ISIS) does not regain strength in Syria,” the White House added.
