Syrian Democratic Council calls for comprehensive peace talks amid escalating violence in northwestern Syria

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) issued a statement condemning the threats faced by Syrian civilians in the escalating violence in northwestern Syria. The SDC called on the international community to act swiftly to halt hostilities, urging pressure on all warring parties to implement a ceasefire and initiate inclusive peace talks that genuinely reflect the aspirations of the Syrian people, with representation from all Syrian factions.

The SDC held the Syrian regime accountable for the deteriorating situation, citing its rejection of initiatives aimed at alleviating the country’s crisis. The Council also blamed the Turkish occupation for the recent escalation in the region, expressing deep concern over the humanitarian plight of displaced individuals from the Al-Shahba area. It called on the United Nations and the UN Security Council to intervene immediately to protect civilians from the dangers posed by armed factions affiliated with Turkey.

The statement highlighted the risks of the Islamic State (ISIS) exploiting the turmoil in northwest Syria, emphasizing the need for the international coalition to continue supporting the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in their efforts to combat terrorism. The SDC stressed the importance of halting all violations targeting minorities and ethnic components, which are essential to Syria’s historical and cultural identity.

The SDC reiterated that the ongoing Syrian crisis can only be resolved through a fair political solution. It called for a national dialogue among all Syrians to strengthen the country’s unity, security, and sovereignty. The Council emphasized the necessity of avoiding campaigns of incitement and revenge, advocating for a political solution aligned with international resolutions.

Finally, the SDC underscored the importance of transitioning to a decentralized democratic political system that safeguards Syria’s unity and meets the diverse aspirations of its people. The Council reaffirmed its openness to dialogue with all Syrians to achieve these goals.
