NATO members voice concern over escalation in Syria, stress urgent need for de-escalation

BRUSSELS — During a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels on Tuesday, member states expressed deep concern over the escalating crisis in Syria following the capture of Holeb (Aleppo) by Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The ministers called for restraint, protection of civilians, and renewed efforts toward a political resolution to the conflict.

Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon urged all parties involved to avoid further escalation and work toward a peaceful political solution. Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard echoed this sentiment, calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East to alleviate the severe suffering of civilians caught in the conflict.

Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister, Xavier Bettel, highlighted the potential threat of another wave of migration triggered by the violence, emphasizing the importance of civilian protection. Bettel cautioned against any party aligning with factions involved in Syria’s complex conflict.

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced plans to discuss the situation directly with her Turkish counterpart, emphasizing Canada’s concern over the humanitarian impact.

Similarly, US Deputy State Department Spokesman Vedant Patel called for international efforts to de-escalate tensions in Syria. State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller reinforced the need for all actors to prioritize civilian safety in their engagements.

China also weighed in on the crisis, with Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lin Jian expressing deep concern over the developments in northwestern Syria. He reiterated Beijing’s support for efforts to maintain security and stability in the region.

The escalating violence in Holeb and other Syrian regions has drawn international attention, as nations urge urgent measures to prevent further suffering and displacement while seeking a sustainable solution to Syria’s enduring conflict.
