UN Syria Envoy Geir Pedersen warns of escalating danger in Syria amid HTS and SNA advances
HOLEB, Syria — UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen described the situation in Syria as highly dangerous and rapidly evolving, cautioning that the ongoing instability may pave the way for the resurgence of the Islamic State (ISIS).
Speaking during an emergency session of the UN Security Council, Pedersen highlighted the risk of escalating conflicts across other regions of Syria and the potential for large-scale displacement of civilians. He urged all parties to prioritize the protection of civilians and ensure safe passage for those fleeing the violence.
Pedersen emphasized the need for de-escalation to safeguard Syria’s unity and territorial integrity, calling on Syrian and international stakeholders to engage in meaningful negotiations to resolve the crisis.
The Special Envoy announced his plans to return to the region to facilitate talks aimed at reviving the political process. He stressed that any de-escalation efforts must be accompanied by credible political solutions to address the aspirations of the Syrian people.
Late week, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched a significant offensive, seizing control of most of Holeb (Aleppo), its countryside, and regions of Edleb (Idlib) and Hemto (Hama). The offensive has triggered a mass displacement of civilians, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the country.
