130 civil society organizations urge UN action to halt military escalation in northern Syria
NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — A coalition of 130 civil society organizations operating in North and East Syria issued a joint statement urging the UN Security Council to protect civilians and take immediate action to halt the escalating military conflict in northern Syria. The statement also emphasized the need to bolster humanitarian efforts in the region.
The organizations expressed alarm over the latest surge in violence, describing it as a critical turning point in the Syrian conflict. They highlighted concerns for Syrian communities, particularly religious and ethnic minorities, who remain vulnerable to violations by Turkish-backed armed groups known for their history of abuses.
The statement also addressed fears among residents of non-government-controlled areas, which have recently been subjected to aerial bombardment by Syrian regime and Russian forces, resulting in civilian casualties and injuries.
The signatories strongly condemned all violations against civilians, regardless of the perpetrator, and called on the UN Security Council to issue an urgent resolution mandating a ceasefire and de-escalation in all conflict zones across Syria.
Additionally, they urged the Council to take tangible steps to ensure civilian protection, hold violators accountable, and enhance humanitarian access to affected areas.
The organizations further demanded that all parties to the Syrian conflict adhere to international humanitarian law, cease military actions that cause displacement or harm to civilians, and grant independent organizations access to affected regions to document violations and assess humanitarian needs.
The statement underscores the growing humanitarian crisis in northern Syria and calls for swift international intervention to prevent further suffering and loss of life.
