Mass displacement of Syriac–Assyrian families from Hmoth (Homs) ahead of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham advance

HMOTH, Syria — The ongoing military developments in northern and central Syria have intensified the suffering of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) communities, with displacement becoming a defining feature of their current reality.

According to sources, a new wave of displacement of Syriac–Assyrian families from Hmoth (Homs) began on Thursday evening as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) forces advanced in the region.

The sources confirmed that Syriac–Assyrian residents are fleeing from Homs to nearby Syriac-Assyrian villages, including Zaidal, Fairuza, Fahila, Maskana, Sadad, and Hafar.

While most of the Syriac–Assyrian community has left Hmoth, a small number remain in the city, awaiting updates on the rapidly evolving situation. This has created an atmosphere of anxiety and tension among those who stayed behind.

The sources further reported that the displaced Syriac–Assyrian families are looking to their religious leaders for guidance on how to navigate these uncertain times.

Previously, many Syriac families had fled from Holeb (Aleppo) to Hmoth as HTS forces advanced in the northern regions. However, the militant group’s swift progress into central Syria has now forced a second wave of displacement within the same community.
