HTS leader appears in Daramsuq as opposition solidifies control following regime collapse
DARAMSUQ — Following the collapse of the Syrian regime, Ahmed al-Shara, the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, made a high-profile appearance in Damascus, the former stronghold of the Assad government. Al-Shara was seen at the historic Umayyad Mosque where he declared victory of the Syrian regime and praised HTS’s recent achievements. He criticized the former regime for transforming Syria into a hub for Iranian influence, sectarianism, and the production of Captagon, a widely trafficked drug.
Al-Shara reiterated HTS’s commitment to its goals established in 2011, emphasizing that there is no turning back. He urged restraint around public institutions to preserve infrastructure and maintain order.
A separate video circulated showing former Prime Minister Mohamed Ghazi al-Jalali exiting his residence to formally cede power to opposition forces now managing military operations in the capital. Surrounded by armed guards, al-Jalali’s departure marked a significant moment in the transition of power.
The current Prime Minister of the Syrian Salvation Government (SSG), the political wing of HTS, was named as the head of the transitional authority and will act as Syria’s Prime Minister.
Former Syrian Minister of Justice Ahmed al-Sayed also issued a statement urging citizens to protect public assets, particularly legal documents such as property deeds, to ensure a foundation for rights, justice, and equality. Al-Sayed expressed optimism that the swift developments could pave the way for a more equitable and dignified life for all Syrians, highlighting the importance of restoring Syria to its “Arab identity.”
Meanwhile, the Kremlin announced on Sunday that HTS and other opposition factions had provided assurances to safeguard Russian military installations and diplomatic missions within Syria, signaling an effort to prevent further escalation amid the ongoing power shift.
