European Syriac Union hosts lecture in Germany on current conditions of Syria–Assyrian communities in Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia)

DELMENHORST, Germany — The European Syriac Union (ESU) held a political lecture on Sunday evening in the German city of Delmenhorst, focusing on the challenges faced by Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) communities in their ancestral homeland of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia), particularly in Syria and Lebanon. The event took place at Saint John Dakfuna Church, with 40 attendees from the local community.

The lecture featured presentations by ESU Co-Chair Manuela Demir and former Syriac Member of Turkish Parliament and member of the Bethnahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo D’Bethnahrin, MUB) Tuma Çelik. The event began with a moment of silence in honor of the martyrs of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people.

During the lecture, Çelik highlighted the current conditions in Beth Nahrain amid the dramatic transformations reshaping the Middle East, including the recent political upheavals in Syria and Lebanon. He emphasized the urgent need for unity and solidarity among all organizations and individuals within the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community to ensure their representation in the evolving political landscape of the region.

Demir urged the European diaspora to support the aid collection campaign launched by the MUB, underscoring the critical role of unity across different sects, political affiliations, and cultural identities in defending the rights and freedoms of the community.

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where attendees shared their views and posed questions to the speakers, fostering a spirited dialogue about the future of their people in Beth Nahrain and beyond.
