Iraqi Society for Human Rights hosts 10th conference in Detroit, advocates for justice and equality
DETROIT, Michigan, USA — In celebration of the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 25th anniversary of its own establishment, the Iraqi Society for Human Rights in the United States held its 10th conference in Detroit, Michigan. The event, held under the slogan “Imposing the Rule of Law: A Guarantee for Strengthening Human Rights in Iraq,” brought together representatives of organizations, political parties, and notable Iraqi figures in media, sports, literature, and culture.
The conference commenced with a moment of silence to honor the martyrs. Sameh Korkis, a keynote speaker, emphasized the need to shield Iraq from regional and international conflicts. He called on the government to address pressing challenges faced by citizens, enhance human rights protections, and foster a culture of tolerance and inclusivity. - Supporting national initiatives that safeguard constitutional rights for all Iraqis.
- Strengthening civil institutions and their role in addressing human rights issues.
- Taking strict legal action against terrorism, violence, sectarianism, corruption, and forced displacement.
- Promoting the safe return of displaced persons and halting demographic changes imposed by armed groups.
- Empowering media and civil organizations to raise awareness about human rights violations.
- Enhancing the Iraqi-American diaspora’s engagement with U.S. institutions to benefit their communities.
Additionally, the conference highlighted the importance of addressing discrimination, protecting vulnerable groups, and reinforcing the rule of law as a cornerstone for a just society. Messages of solidarity and congratulations were shared, including one from the Bethnahrin Patriotic Union (Huyodo Bethnahrin Athroyo, HBA).
The event concluded with a reaffirmation of the Society’s commitment to advancing human rights in Iraq and building bridges between Iraqis at home and abroad.
