Patriarchate of the Assyrian Church of the East and Christian leaders call for peace and equality in post-regime Syria
DARAMSUQ — The Patriarchate of the Assyrian Church of the East issued a statement urging all political parties in Syria to prioritize peace and fraternity in rebuilding the country following recent transformative events. The Patriarchate emphasized the importance of shaping Syria’s future on principles of equality, justice, and adherence to international laws. It called on officials to respect the human dignity and rights of all citizens, regardless of their religion or ethnicity, while offering prayers for the safety and harmony of all communities.
Bishop Hanna Jallouf, the Apostolic Vicar of the Latins in Holeb (Aleppo), shared that he recently met with Ahmed al-Sharaa, leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and formerly known as Mohammed al-Jolani. Al-Sharaa reportedly assured the bishop that Christians and their property would be protected and their legitimate requests fulfilled. According to Bishop Jallouf, these assurances have thus far been upheld, with Christians being treated respectfully.
Commenting on the widespread celebration among Christians following the fall of the Syrian regime, Father Bahjat Qaraqash, Franciscan priest of the Latin parish in Holeb, explained that Christians, like many Syrians, had endured decades of economic stagnation and oppressive governance. He urged the international community to help stabilize Syria and support the drafting of a new constitution that ensures equal rights for all citizens.
Father Firas Lutfi, Latin parish priest in Daramsuq (Damascus), described the fall of the regime as a symbolic gift coinciding with Mary’s Day, marking the birth of a new Syria after 53 years of authoritarian rule. He highlighted the devastation left behind by the Assad regime, including over half a million deaths and a crumbling economy, and expressed optimism for a brighter future.
As Syria embarks on a new chapter, Christian leaders are hopeful that unity, justice, and dialogue will guide the nation toward a stable and inclusive future.
