Syriac Orthodox Archbishop Amsih sends Christmas message of hope during Syria’s political transitional
NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — As Syria navigates rapid political developments following the overthrow of the Assad regime and the formation of a new transitional government, Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Gozarto (Jazira) and Euphrates Mor Maurice Amsih addressed the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community in a message through Syriac Press.
In his heartfelt Christmas message, Archbishop Amsih expressed his prayers for Syria, saying, “As Christmas approaches, we ask God to spread goodness and peace throughout Syria.” He acknowledged the deep connection between the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community and the political changes in the country, emphasizing his hope for stability and harmony among all components of Syrian society. Rejecting the label of “minorities,” he affirmed the equal role of all ethnic and religious groups as intrinsic elements of Syria’s identity.
Reflecting on the hardships of the past 14 years, the Archbishop spoke of the collective suffering endured by Syrians. “Every Syrian carried the cross of suffering, facing killing, displacement, and perilous journeys in search of safety,” he noted, adding that the conflict has driven more than half of Syria’s population into emigration, leaving behind a legacy of pain and loss.
As Syrians prepare to close a painful chapter in their history, Archbishop Amsih called for unity, hope, and renewal. “We are bidding farewell to a history filled with sorrow and welcoming a new year full of peace, love, and hope for all humanity,” he said.
In a special appeal, the Archbishop urged Syrians in the diaspora to maintain their ties with those who remain in the homeland. He encouraged them to support their compatriots, particularly during this critical phase of Syria’s transformation, and to contribute to rebuilding a country that can offer security and peace to all its people.
Archbishop Amsih concluded his message with a prayer, asking God to open a new chapter for Syria, one marked by safety, reconciliation, and enduring hope.
