Syriac Union Party calls for Syriac-Assyrian inclusion in Syria’s new constitution amid uncertainty

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — Amid significant developments in Syria, particularly the fall of the former Syrian regime and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s (HTS) assumption of power, coupled with ongoing Turkish threats against the Democratic Autonomous Administration in the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES), Co-Chair of the Syriac Union Party (SUP) Sanharib Barsom highlighted the importance of clarifying the situation of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean).

In a statement to Syriac Press, Barsom emphasized the party’s dedication to ensuring that the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people play a pivotal role in the reconstruction of a new Syria alongside other communities. He stressed the necessity of establishing their national and religious rights in the new Syrian constitution. Barsom also assured that the party values the perspectives of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community, integrating their input into party decisions while coordinating efforts with all factions representing the community.

The ascent of HTS to power in Syria has raised concerns about the future treatment of Christians, including the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people. Despite reassurances from HTS leadership regarding religious tolerance, apprehensions persist due to the absence of explicit recognition of Christian rights within the proposed Syrian constitution.

The Syriac Union Party remains committed to advocating for the rights and representation of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people, aiming to secure their place in shaping Syria’s future governance amidst the ongoing uncertainties.
