Dutch Parliament debates support and protection for ethnic and religious minorities in post-Assad Syria

THE HAGUE — Recent debates in the Dutch Parliament featured prominent political figures, including Isa Kahraman (Nieuw Sociaal Contract, NSC), NSC Head Pieter Omtzigt, and Member of the Dutch Parliament and Foreign Affairs Spokesman of the Coalition Don Seder (ChristenUnie, CU), alongside government officials such as Minister of Foreign Affairs Caspar Veldkamp (NSC). The discussions focused on the urgent need to support minorities, including Syriacs (Arameans–Assyrians–Chaldeans) and Armenians who have faced decades of displacement and persecution.

The sessions emphasized the importance of ensuring these groups’ active participation in shaping Syria’s future political system, built on justice and equality. During the debate, Minister Veldkamp highlighted the opportunity presented by the fall of the Assad regime to rebuild Syria in a way that guarantees the rights of all minorities and enhances national stability.

The Minister underscored the critical need to include minority communities in political decision-making, secure their fundamental rights, and protect them from future threats. He reaffirmed the Netherlands’ commitment, in collaboration with international partners, to support efforts aimed at ending conflicts and creating safe and stable environments for Syrian minorities.

The discussions also highlighted the provision of humanitarian and political support to minorities and the need for their fair representation in international negotiations. The Minister Veldkamp called for strengthened international cooperation, stating that the active involvement of the global community is essential to ensuring a more just and peaceful future for Syria’s diverse communities.
