European Syriac Union hosts lecture in Wiesbaden commemorating 100 years since displacement of Syriac–Assyrian people from Hakkari

WIESBADEN, Germany — Marking the centenary of the displacement of the Syriac–Assyrian people from the Hakkari region in Turkey following the massacres of 1915, the European Syriac Union (ESU) announced a commemorative lecture in Wiesbaden, Germany. The event will cover the historical circumstances that led to this forced migration, the hardships endured by displaced families, and the ongoing impact on the Syriac–Assyrian community in the diaspora.

The lecture will be held on 21 December in the hall of the Church of Mar Isaiah, located on Willy-Yoube Street, beginning at 7:30 PM. It will be presented by journalist Ghassan Younan and former Syriac Member of Turkish Parliament and member of the Bethnahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo D’Bethnahrin, MUB) Tuma Çelik.

Representatives from several organizations, including the European Syriac Union, the Assyrian Democratic Party, Beth Nahrin Democratic Party, the Assyrian Democratic Organization, and the International Assyrian Union, will participate in discussions.

The lecture aims to honor the memory of those forcibly displaced, raise awareness of the history and suffering of the Syriac–Assyrian people, and emphasize the importance of preserving their heritage and identity, particularly within diaspora communities.
