Syrian Democratic Forces: Turkey and its proxies continue attacks despite US-sponsored ceasefire

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — On Thursday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) issued a public statement accusing Turkey and its proxy Syrian National Army (SNA) of persistently violating the US-sponsored ceasefire agreement.

The SDF stated that Turkish forces and their affiliated militant groups continue to launch attacks on multiple areas, including the vicinity of Kobane, Ayn Issa, and the Tishrin Dam in North and East Syria, in blatant violation of the truce.

A spokesperson for the US State Department had earlier announced an extension of the ceasefire agreement between the SDF and Turkey until the end of the week.

Members of US Congress Chris Van Hollen and Lindsey Graham warned of potential sanctions against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan unless Turkey compels opposition fighters to halt their assaults on the SDF. The lawmakers emphasized that while Turkey’s security concerns warrant consideration, these actions undermine regional stability, and the United States cannot remain passive.

Following the fall of the Assad regime, Turkey and its allied factions intensified their attacks on the SDF, jeopardizing the SDF’s critical role in preventing the resurgence of the Islamic State (ISIS).
