Maronite Bishop of Holeb (Aleppo) urges Syrian Christians to play active role in nation’s future

HOLEB, Syria — In a statement to Vatican News, Maronite Bishop of Holeb (Aleppo) Joseph Tobji urged Christians in Syria to step forward and contribute during this pivotal moment in the country’s history.

Bishop Tobji emphasized that Syrian Christians must assert themselves as equal partners in political and societal life, rejecting the notion of being second-class citizens. He noted that a significant challenge lies in the lack of preparation among Christians for active political participation. Historically, decisions were made for Christians rather than by them, leaving many unprepared for direct involvement in shaping Syria’s future.

Highlighting the importance of inclusivity, Bishop Tobji called for laying the groundwork for a civil state, guided by policies and principles that respect all citizens. He expressed hope that Christians would rise to this challenge and actively contribute to fostering a pluralistic society.

Bishop Tobji also commented on assurances made by Syrian Prime Minister-designate Muhammad al-Bashir to Western nations. Al-Bashir pledged to protect minorities, women, and children, as well as to implement justice across various sectors. Tobji expressed optimism that these promises are genuine, given the international scrutiny Syria is under. “Without meeting certain conditions, Syria will not gain recognition as a legitimate state by the global community,” he said, though he acknowledged the difficulty of predicting the country’s future.

Despite the uncertainties, Bishop Tobji conveyed hope for Syria’s reconstruction and encouraged Christians to actively engage in building a society that values equality and justice for all.
