Syrians demonstrate for unity, freedom, and a democratic future amid fears of civil restrictions and Turkish threats
ZALIN, North and East Syria / DARAMSUQ — In response to escalating threats from Turkey and its Syrian National Army (SNA) proxies) to occupy the city of Kobane in in North and East Syria, thousands of residents in Zalin (Qamishli) took to the streets to show solidarity with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The demonstrators marched through Zalin, waving the flag of Free Syria alongside banners of the SDF and the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES). Representatives from various Administration institutions joined the procession, echoing chants such as “Let us join hands against the occupation,” “No to the occupation,” “The SDF is our strength,” and “Long live the brotherhood of peoples.” Slogans also emphasized unity among Kurds, Arabs, and Syriacs (Arameans–Assyrians–Chaldeans), reinforcing the region’s commitment to resistance as a path to freedom.
During the demonstration, DAARNES officials delivered speeches celebrating the fall of the authoritarian regime and acknowledging the hardships endured under the Baath Party’s six-decade rule. They called for the establishment of a decentralized, pluralistic, and democratic Syria where all ethnic and religious groups are treated equally.
Meanwhile, in the Syrian capital of Daramsuq (Damascus), hundreds of men and women gathered at Umayyad Square, responding to a call from the “Civil Youth Gathering.” The demonstrators demanded the creation of a civil state and greater inclusion of women in public and political life under Syria’s new administration.
Remarkably, security forces refrained from intervening in the demonstration, creating an atmosphere of newfound freedom. Syrians described the scene as a moment of relief, symbolizing the end of half a century of authoritarianism under the Assad regime and the hope for a brighter, more inclusive future.
