Advisor to Republican Party reaffirms US support for Syrian Democratic Forces amid tensions with Turkey
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a reaffirmation of US support for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Hazem Alghabra, a member of the US Republican Party, highlighted the firm stance of Congress and the preparation of a sanctions bill against Turkey as a clear message of solidarity with its allies in North and East Syria.
Alghabra stated that Turkey misinterpreted the US position, believing it had an unrestricted “green light” from former President Trump. He emphasized that the US sees opportunities for dialogue between Turkey and the SDF to address Ankara’s security concerns constructively.
“The US envisions a possible solution and encourages Turkey to play a positive role in Syria after the fall of Assad,” he added.
Since the collapse of the Syrian regime, the Turkish state and opposition factions have repeatedly launched attacks on North and East Syria, aiming to occupy areas such as Kobane and other territories.
In response to Turkey’s aggression, US senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) Lindsey Graham (R-SC) introduced a bipartisan bill proposing sanctions on Turkey for its actions against the SDF, further underscoring America’s commitment to its allies in the region.
