Syrian Church leaders call for lifting of sanctions and participation of all components in drafting new constitution
DARAMSUQ — In a pivotal moment in Syria’s history, Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarch Youssef al-Absi, and Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch John X Yazigi issued a joint statement urging collective efforts to build a unified and prosperous Syria. The statement called for humility, courage, and a commitment to fostering dialogue and openness, while appealing to the international community to lift the external economic blockade on Syria.
The Church leaders emphasized the need for a comprehensive national dialogue that includes all sects and communities. Such dialogue, they stated, would strengthen societal cohesion and redefine Syrian national identity based on principles of citizenship, dignity, freedom, and coexistence.
They also proposed organizing dialogue workshops at local levels across governorates, cities, and villages to address challenges undermining social harmony. These initiatives aim to rebuild trust among Syrians through community development projects that reinforce a shared sense of belonging to one nation.
The patriarchs highlighted the importance of reviving the spirit of coexistence while combating narratives of exclusion, hatred, and discrimination. They called for collective efforts to enhance security and safety, ensuring the protection of all citizens and fostering civil peace.
In their appeal to the international community, the Church leaders renewed their demand to lift unjust sanctions, support reconstruction efforts, and promote economic recovery by creating job opportunities. They stressed that the process of drafting a new constitution must be inclusive, with active participation from all segments of Syrian society.
The statement concluded by advocating for a constitution that upholds citizenship, human rights, the rule of law, respect for freedoms, freedom of opinion and belief, and ensures the active participation of women in shaping Syria’s future.
