Syrians and Iraqis welcome 2025 with hope and optimism

DARAMSUQ / BAGHDAD — For the first time in years, Syrians marked New Year’s Eve in a festive atmosphere filled with optimism. Across the border in Iraq, thousands gathered for joyous celebrations to welcome 2025, mirroring grand festivities held worldwide.

In Daramsuq (Damascus), crowds thronged Umayyad Square, waving flags and cheering as fireworks illuminated the sky from Mount Qasioun. Accompanied by jubilant national songs, the celebrations symbolized a collective hope for renewal and unity following the ousting of dictator Bashar al-Assad. For many, it was a rare moment of joy and solidarity after years of conflict.

In Baghdad, the Chaldean Church hosted a special Mass led by Patriarch Louis Raphael Sako. Addressing worshippers from across the nation, the Patriarch called for unity and peace, urging collective efforts toward reconciliation and stability. Fireworks lit up the skies over the Tigris River as social and cultural events brought communities together in celebration.

The Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) also saw vibrant festivities, with Ankawa, Erbil, and Sulaymaniyah adorned in colorful displays. Sulaymaniyah’s streets came alive with music and cultural performances, while security forces ensured the events proceeded peacefully. The celebrations across the KRI reflected a shared sense of hope and optimism for the year ahead.

Globally, New Year’s festivities unfolded in a cascade of time zones. The Pacific island nation of Kiribati, the first to welcome 2025, set the tone for a night of dazzling fireworks and joyous gatherings. From Sydney’s iconic Harbor Bridge to Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, London’s Thames, and New York’s Times Square, cities around the world celebrated in spectacular fashion.

As midnight struck city after city, streets and squares filled with revelers embracing the promise of renewal and shared aspirations for a brighter future. From Asia to Europe to the Americas, the world united in music, light, and hope as it welcomed 2025.
