Syrians and Iraqis welcome 2025 with hope and optimism

DARAMSUQ / BAGHDAD — For the first time in years, Syrians marked New Year’s Eve in a festive atmosphere filled with optimism. Across the border in Iraq, thousands gathered for joyous celebrations to welcome 2025, mirroring grand festivities held worldwide.

In Daramsuq (Damascus), crowds thronged Umayyad Square, waving flags and cheering as fireworks illuminated the sky from Mount Qasioun. Accompanied by jubilant national songs, the celebrations symbolized a collective hope for renewal and unity following the ousting of dictator Bashar al-Assad. For many, it was a rare moment of joy and solidarity after years of conflict.

In Baghdad, the Chaldean Church hosted a special Mass led by Patriarch Louis Raphael Sako. Addressing worshippers from across the nation, the Patriarch called for unity and peace, urging collective efforts toward reconciliation and stability. The Pacific island nation of Kiribati, the first to welcome 2025, set the tone for a night of dazzling fireworks and joyous gatherings.
