Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch John X Yazigi excluded from national dialogue conference, calls for unity despite tensions
DARAMSUQ — Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch John X Yazigi revealed that he has not received an invitation to participate in the upcoming National Dialogue Conference in Syria. The conference, scheduled to take place in the next two weeks, has generated considerable attention as a potential turning point in Syria’s political landscape.
Speaking from Daramsuq (Damascus), the Patriarch expressed his disappointment but extended an olive branch to Ahmad al-Sharaa, leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the group currently governing large parts of Syria. “We are ready to work together to build a new Syria,” he stated, signaling a willingness to collaborate despite past tensions. He also invited al-Sharaa to visit the Patriarchate, referencing a tradition established by Syrian leaders since the country’s independence.
HTS has made efforts to reassure Syria’s Christian population about their rights and freedoms under its rule, emphasizing the protection of property and the ability to practice religious rituals without interference. However, isolated incidents of attacks on Christian sites by rogue elements within HTS have raised concerns, despite the group’s swift responses and promises to hold those responsible accountable.
Observers note that HTS is aware of both international and domestic scrutiny regarding its treatment of minorities, including Christians, Alawites, and Kurds. The group’s approach to these communities is seen as a critical measure of its ability to govern inclusively and maintain stability.
The exclusion of Patriarch John X from the National Dialogue Conference highlights the difficulties in fostering true inclusivity in Syria’s complex sociopolitical environment. As the conference approaches, questions remain about how fully Syria’s Christian leaders will be represented in shaping the country’s future.
