Women’s Consultative Forum in Hasakah, North and East Syria, charts path for gender equality in Syria’s democratic future
HASAKAH, North and East Syria — The first Women’s Consultative Forum in North and East Syria concluded yesterday in Hasakah, bringing together numerous women’s organizations from across Syria, including the Syriac Women’s Union (SWU). Held under the theme Together to Build a Democratic Syria, the forum focused on empowering women and solidifying their role in the nation’s post-conflict reconstruction.
The event opened with a public statement honoring the sacrifices of women throughout Syria, particularly in North and East Syria. The statement emphasized the critical need to grant women full rights in the wake of the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s authoritarian regime.
The forum produced several key resolutions aimed at advancing gender equality and women’s active participation in rebuilding Syria. Notable decisions included:
-
- Supporting the Syrian Women’s Council declaration and working to implement its goals.
- Accelerating the drafting and adoption of a women’s social contract for North and East Syria.
- Ensuring that women hold at least 50% of seats in the National Congress for establishing a new Syria.
- Demanding female representation in the transitional government and active involvement in drafting the new Syrian constitution.
- Prohibiting any restrictions on women’s rights, including their freedom to work, study, travel, and live autonomously.
The forum also highlighted the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES) as a progressive model for protecting women’s rights and freedoms.
This landmark forum signified a significant step toward ensuring women’s central role in Syria’s democratic and inclusive future. By advocating for tangible measures and representation, participants aimed to create a society that values equality, justice, and human rights for all.
