Syriac woman fatally stabbed in Stockholm store, suspect arrested

NORSBORG, Sweden — On Tuesday evening, Swedish police received reports of a knife attack targeting inside the ICA Maxi store in Norsborg, south of Stockholm. The victim of the attack was 60-year-old Syriac woman of Iraqi origin.

Despite being airlifted to the hospital by an ambulance helicopter, the woman succumbed to her injuries.

Police swiftly arrested a 25-year-old man of Indian origin at the scene. He confessed to committing the crime.

The victim, who had worked at the store for nearly 15 years, was well-known in the community. It remains unclear whether there was a prior connection between her and the suspect.

“It is still unknown whether the woman and the man knew each other before,” Stockholm police spokesperson Daniel Vikdal told SVT.

According to Aftonbladet, the attack appears to have been random, with no evidence of a link between the perpetrator and the victim.

The knife used in the attack, as well as a car found at the scene, were seized by the police. Surveillance footage from inside the store captured much of the incident, providing crucial details for the investigation.

Authorities have not found evidence suggesting the involvement of another individual.

Media reports indicate that the suspect may suffer from a mental illness, though he has not been transferred to a medical facility following his arrest.

The management of the ICA Maxi store announced that it would remain closed on Wednesday to provide psychological support for employees affected by the tragedy.

“Our top priority now is to support the employees and the victim’s family,” store manager Larch Nelson said.

The crime has caused widespread shock and sorrow in the predominantly Syriac community of Botkyrka. Residents described the attack as both horrific and unjustified.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of a beloved figure and seeks answers in the wake of this senseless tragedy.
