US President Biden awards Pope Francis the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction
WASHINGTON, D.C. — US President Joe Biden awarded Pope Francis the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction, the highest civilian honor in the United States, recognizing him as a source of faith, hope, and love that inspires people worldwide.
In a statement, the White House announced that this marks the first time Biden has awarded the medal with the rank of “excellence.”
“Pope Francis, your humility and grace are beyond words, and your unparalleled love for all humanity sets you apart. As the pope of the people, you embody the light of faith, hope, and love that shines across the world. Today, it was my honor to award Pope Francis the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction,” Biden shared in a heartfelt message.
Last week, Biden canceled a planned visit to Rome, where he was scheduled to meet with Pope Francis. The trip was postponed to allow the president to oversee federal efforts in managing the wildfires in California and Los Angeles.
