IRAQ: Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian political parties meet in Ankawa to discuss joint efforts
ANKAWA, Kurdistan Region of Iraq — Several Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian political parties convened at the headquarters of the Beth Nahrain Patriotic Union (Huyodo Bethnahrin Athroyo, HBA) in Ankawa, Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), to discuss strategies for enhancing collective action and achieving unified stances to advance their political aspirations.
The gathering brought together several prominent political organizations, including the (HBA), the Assyrian Democratic Movement (Zawʻá Demoqraṭáyá ʼÁṯuráyá, Zowaa), the Beth Nahrain Democratic Party (BNDP), and the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian Popular Council (Motwa). The meeting aimed to address pressing political and regional developments while fostering collaboration among the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian parties.
Emphasis on Unity and Advocacy
Participants underscored the importance of collective efforts to secure the rights and representation of the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian community. They called for joint actions to ensure the Iraqi Parliament implements Article 125 of the Federal Constitution, which guarantees administrative, political, cultural, and educational autonomy for minority groups.
The attendees also emphasized the need to safeguard the electoral quota system under the proposed election law currently being debated in Parliament. The quota system reserves five parliamentary seats for Christians, ensuring representation for minority groups in provinces like Baghdad, Nineveh, and Erbil.
Challenges and Safeguards
Leaders expressed concerns about the potential exploitation of the quota system by larger political parties, highlighting the importance of maintaining its integrity to ensure genuine representation for the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian community.
This meeting marks another step toward strengthening national unity and securing the rights of the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian community amid Iraq’s dynamic political and legal environment. By advocating for the implementation of constitutional provisions and protecting the electoral quota system, these parties aim to ensure fair and equitable representation for their people.
