US Senator Marco Rubio stresses minority rights in Syria and continued support for SDF at confirmation hearing

WASHINGTON, D.C. — US Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), the Trump Administration nominee for Secretary of State, emphasized the importance of protecting minorities in Syria, including Christians, and affirmed continued US support for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in their fight against the Islamic State (ISIS). Rubio made these statements during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee yesterday.

Support for the SDF

In response to a question from Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) about US support for the SDF, Rubio stated, “Yes, we will continue. The SDF fighters have made significant sacrifices and have been a key factor in defeating ISIS. Moreover, they have detained ISIS militants and face substantial risks.”

Rubio highlighted the importance of maintaining the ceasefire between Turkey and the SDF, warning against any exploitation of the US power transition by Turkey to breach existing agreements.

Sanctions on Syria

Addressing sanctions on Syria, Rubio argued for their removal, noting that the government they were originally imposed on is no longer in power.

However, Rubio expressed skepticism about the new leadership in Syria, stating, “The new individuals in charge in Syria cannot escape FBI investigations, and they do not have a record that makes us happy or reassured.”

National and Regional Priorities

Rubio underlined the need to prevent Syria from becoming a haven for ISIS and stressed the importance of respecting religious minorities, including Alawites and Christians, while ensuring protections for the Kurds. Additionally, he voiced concerns about Syria being used as a corridor for Iran to spread terrorism through Hezbollah and destabilize Lebanon.

Rubio concluded by linking these goals to both US national interests and the stability of the broader Middle East region.
