Syriac Orthodox Patriarch meets Arab League delegation to discuss Syria’s reconstruction

DARAMSUQ — Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II welcomed an Arab League delegation led by Assistant Secretary-General Ambassador Hossam Zaki at the patriarchate in Daramsuq (Damascus).

The meeting aimed to strengthen collaboration between the Syriac Orthodox Church and the Arab League. Patriarch Aphrem highlighted Syria’s rich tapestry of religious, cultural, and linguistic diversity, emphasizing the need to turn challenges into opportunities for rebuilding the nation. He called for economic revitalization and the creation of a dignified life for all citizens in a state that upholds and protects the rights of its diverse population.

Arab League’s Vision for Syria’s Future

Ambassador Zaki shared the Arab League’s commitment to supporting Syria’s reconstruction and societal rebuilding. He underlined the importance of principles such as citizenship, democracy, justice, and equality in ensuring the freedom and dignity of all Syrians.

The meeting brought together a distinguished group of religious leaders, including Patriarchal Vicar of the Greek Orthodox Church Bishop Romanos Hannat, Armenian Orthodox Archbishop Armash Nalbandian, Armenian Catholic Archbishop George Assadourian, and representatives from the Evangelical, Maronite, and Latin Churches, along with bishops of the Syriac Orthodox Church.

This gathering underscored the shared vision of promoting unity and resilience as Syria navigates its path toward recovery and reconciliation.
