Deputy Co-Chair of Syrian Democratic Council Afram Ishaq: Diversity in North and East Syria is a model of coexistence and social integration
NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — In a statement published on the official website of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), Afram Ishaq, SDC Deputy Co-Chair, highlighted North and East Syria as a unique model of national and religious diversity in a recent article. He described the region as a mosaic of rich history and identity, where various cultures and traditions coexist harmoniously within a shared geographical framework.
A Region of Cultural Integration
Ishaq noted that North and East Syria encompasses multiple national and religious communities, including Syriacs (Arameans–Assyrians–Chaldeans), Arabs, Kurds, Yezidis, Armenians, and Turkmen. This diversity, he said, serves as a vivid example of coexistence and integration in the Middle East.
Historically, the region has been a beacon of civilizational interaction among different peoples. Ishaq emphasized that its cultural and religious pluralism has fostered integration and cooperation rather than division.
“The Syriacs, with their cultural and linguistic heritage, and the Kurds and Arabs, with their significant contributions to science and culture, form the pillars of this cohesive social fabric,” Ishaq declared.
DAARNES: Protecting and Promoting Diversity
Ishaq lauded the efforts of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES) in safeguarding the region’s diversity. These efforts include policies that support local languages, revive cultural heritage through schools, festivals, and cultural events, and ensure fair representation of all ethnic groups in political and administrative bodies. Such initiatives, he explained, enhance stability and strengthen communal ties.
Concluding his statement, Ishaq stressed that pluralism in North and East Syria is not a challenge but a source of strength and motivation for stability. He expressed hope that the region’s model of mutual respect and cooperation could serve as an example for other areas, paving the way for a future built on shared values and collaboration.
