Syriac Union Party Co-Chair Sanharib Barsom: Democratic model in North and East Syria is the most suitable solution for Syria

ZALIN, North and East Syria — In an interview with Hawar News Agency, Sanharib Barsom, Co-Chair of the Syriac Union Party (SUP), emphasized that the governance model implemented by the Democratic Autonomous Administration in the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES) offers the most viable solution for the country.

Barsom highlighted that DAARNES has been functioning for over a decade, founded on principles of coexistence, acceptance, and equality among all ethnic and religious groups. These core values, he stated, are essential for the diverse ethnic components of Syria to live harmoniously.

“We are advocating for a decentralized, democratic, and pluralistic Syrian government,” Barsom asserted, noting that DAARNES represents a critical first step toward a decentralized system that empowers local communities to manage their own affairs while maintaining a unified Syria.

Criticism of HTS Governance

Barsom criticized the changes introduced by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), stating that the group has formed a government with a singular focus, lacking inclusivity. He emphasized that this government, which lacks full authority, should restrict itself to basic administrative and service-related tasks until a national conference involving all of Syria’s ethnic components can be convened.

Expressing hope for a united Syria built through the participation of all its ethnic communities, Barsom urged democratic parties to work collectively to achieve this vision. He reiterated that it is a shared responsibility to ensure the new Syria is founded on inclusivity, equality, and self-governance.
